Watch Installation Video at Basin-Saver.com before reading.
Basin-Saver kits are made specifically for 2’ x 2’ square basins or circular basins approximately 3’ in diameter. If your basin is larger than 2’ x 2’ or 3’ dia, 2 kits may be necessary to complete the installation. Likewise, if the repair area is greater than 2’ depth into the basin walls, a 2nd kit will be needed to cover the additional area (i.e. two kits may be needed to treat damaged walls if the damaged area extends 3’ down the wall). Always install the lower area before the higher area and over lap the top fabric 5” to 6” over the lower fabric.
* If the application area is much larger (i.e. a large concrete culvert), please email us with dimensions and a custom kit can be prepared for your project. Appropriate pricing will apply per project specifications.
BEST PRACTICES
*Make sure you have all tools & safety equipment before beginning work.
1. Assess project conditions: Establish work zone with barricades, cones and/ or caution tape. If the interior of the basin is damp, rain has occurred recently, or the basin always contains water and does not drain properly, Basin Saver may not work as intended. Always use a moisture detector before installing. Basin walls should show 5% moisture or less for optimum adhesion; 7% or less for good adhesion. If moisture is present, try using a fan or small space heater to circulate air into the basin to dry it out before testing for moisture again. Heated air will work best, if available (i.e small space heater).
Approx. time to complete: Varies
2. Repair walls first: Replace broken or missing block, complete tuck pointing and treat cracks with hydraulic cement, complete all other necessary repairs prior to the next step.
Approx time to complete: 30 min to 2 hours (every job is different)
3. Prepare walls: Using a diamond plate grinder, remove approx 1/8” to ¼” of concrete from each interior wall. Installer will have to lie on ground to reach into the hole to complete this step. The texture after grinding should feel similar to an orange peal. Wear an appropriate mask or ventilator to avoid inhaling concrete dust. Using your hand, small brush or forced air blower, remove any remaining dust on each wall. Grinding is recommended as it will remove all dirt, debris, oil, mildew etc. and does not add moisture into the basin.
Approx time to complete: 30 min to 40 min
* If for whatever reason grinding is not an option, use a high pressure power washer (at least 4000 psi) to clean the walls. Make sure walls a free of all loose debris. Soap may be needed to remove oils from walls. Pressure washing will not result in a texture of an orange peal and will add at least one day to the project as the water will have to evaporate from the basin prior to installation. Use a moisture gauge before beginning installation.
Approx time to complete: Pressure Washing, 30 min, water evaporation, approx 24 hours (use fan or small space heater in basin to reduce drying time).
4. Prepare support pin holes: Review your installation area inside the basin. Mark area to be reinforced with chalk or other marking tool. Place an “X” on each wall (or opposite sides of a circular basin) that is approx 6” to 12” below the top of the installation area. Use the concrete drill with 12”-16” long, 3/8” dia concrete drill bit and drill holes through each “X”. The angle of each hole does not matter as long as the pin extends at least 1” into the basin once installed. Once holes are drilled, remove dust from each hole with high power vacuum (recommended) or forced air blower. Remove as much dust from hole as possible before injecting epoxy.
Pro Tip: Before injecting epoxy, test each hole with ONE of the 18” fiberglass pins. Make sure it will not fall completely into the hole (loose hole) and to test if there is resistance in getting the pin into the hole (tight hole). A hammer may be needed to tap the pin into the hole so it does not extend 3” or more into the basin (though this should not jeopardize the installed product). Make sure you are able to remove the pin… do not get it stuck before injecting the epoxy.
* Should an 18” fiberglass pin be lost into a hole, each kit contains four 6” carbon fiber pins. Use these as needed to make sure at least 1” extends into the basin wall. Add extra epoxy into the hole prior to installing the 6” pin after the 18” if this is required.
Put on rubber gloves before working with epoxy. Load epoxy cartridge into 2-cylinder epoxy gun then inject a good amount of epoxy into a hole. Insert 18” fiberglass pin as described above into each of the four holes. *If holes are drilled at a sharp angle, be vigilant of pins to make sure they do not slide into the hole. The epoxy will start to cure within 15 – 20 min.
NOTE: The protruding fiberglass & carbon fiber pins are required for the integrity of the Basin Saver system. These pins account for installer error, oversight or moisture detector error in gauging moisture before application. No warranty is provided if the pins do not extend at least 1” into the basin.
Approx time to complete: approx 15 – 20 min
5. Apply epoxy to each wall: Some epoxy may remain in the tube for the from the previous steps. If not, load another epoxy cartridge into the epoxy gun. Using a back and forth motion, apply epoxy on each wall as shown in installation video at www.Basin-Saver.com. Use the plastic epoxy spreader to completely coat the application area. Extend the epoxy approx 1” outside the marked installation area to account for any undulations in each wall. Refer to your chalk markings if needed, as needed. Make sure each wall is completely coated with epoxy.
Approx time to complete: approx 15 – 20 min
6. Apply carbon fiber fabric:
Standard Kit – Using the 10’ x 24” carbon fiber fabric roll, choose a starting point on the wall that was coated with epoxy first. Right next to a pin is easiest. Using a fixed frame of reference (chalk markings, mortar joint or other straight horizontal line in the basin) start applying the fabric to the epoxy coated walls. Keep the fabric as horizontally uniform as possible in the installation area. Smooth out the fabric as it is applied to the walls making sure there are no air bubbles and the fabric conforms to all contours of each wall. Use the plastic epoxy spreader to get the fabric deep into each corner of the basin. Using a cutting tool, cut small holes in the fabric where it meets each fiberglass or carbon fiber pin. Push the fabric over the pin making sure not to push the pin further into the wall (if the epoxy has not fully cured from earlier). Follow this process until the fabric has completely covered all four walls. The fabric should overlap approx 6” from the starting point. NEXT, apply a saturating layer of epoxy over the carbon fiber fabric. Make sure the entire fabric is coated and saturated with epoxy. Use the plastic epoxy spreader to move the epoxy over the fabric and eliminate any air bubbles.
Approx time to complete: approx 20 min
X-tra Strength Kit - Place one 2’ x 2’ carbon fiber square on the wall that was coated with epoxy first. Using a fixed frame of reference (chalk markings, mortar joint or other straight horizontal line in the basin) apply the fabric to the first epoxy coated wall. Keep the fabric as horizontally uniform as possible in the installation area. It is OK if each fabric square may not get into each corner perfectly. Using a cutting tool, cut a small hole in the fabric where it meets the fiberglass or carbon fiber pin. Push the fabric over the pin making sure not to push the pin further into the wall (if the epoxy has not fully cured from earlier). Smooth out the fabric making sure there are no air bubbles and the fabric conforms to all contours of each wall. Follow this process until each wall has one 2’ x 2’ fabric square attached. There should be no overlap with this product at this time. NEXT, apply a saturating layer of epoxy over the carbon fiber fabric. Make sure the entire fabric is coated and saturated with epoxy. Use the plastic epoxy spreader to move the epoxy over the fabric and eliminate any air bubbles. THEN, place a 1’ x 2’ piece of carbon fiber fabric in one corner of the basin. This piece of fabric should be applied so that the 1’ side of the fabric has approx 6” on each wall. Use the plastic epoxy spreader to get fabric deep into the corner of the basin. Repeat this process on all four corners. LAST, apply a saturating layer of epoxy over all the carbon fiber fabric. Make sure the entire fabric is coated and saturated with epoxy. Use the plastic epoxy spreader to move the epoxy over the fabric and eliminate any air bubbles.
Approx time to complete: approx 30 min
7. Allow epoxy to cure: Choose to either leave barricades up, or replace drain grate and re-open area to traffic. Pull off job site. Allow epoxy to cure for at least 24 hours. Upon returning to job site, test to see if epoxy has cured by touching with finger tip. Even cured epoxy may feel tacky, however, if any epoxy sticks to your finger it has not fully cured. Use best judgment to determine how much more time may be needed to fully cure.
8. Apply waterproof membrane & Warranty Badge: Once epoxy is fully cured, prepare to apply waterproof membrane. Pour some of the liquid waterproofing material into paint tray, cover paint roller with waterproofing material and apply to each wall of the basin. Be sure to coat each wall so that NONE of the carbon fiber fabric can be seen through the membrane. Extend the membrane at least 2” to 4” above and below the carbon fiber fabric. Be sure to get material into each corner. Depending on temperature this material my start to cure within 20 – 30 minutes. Once it starts to cure a film will develop. More material CANNOT be applied once a film starts to develop. If any of the carbon fiber fabric can be seen through the membrane once FULLY cured, apply a second coat. Allow at least 24 hours to cure.
*It is best if the Warranty Badge is applied before waterproofing material fully cures so that it becomes part of the membrane. Using permanent marker write the date of the installation on the bottom of the badge. Place badge on one of the walls so that it may be able to be seen through the grate drain (usually a few inches above any of the pins is best).
Approx time to complete: approx 15 - 20 min
Congratulations! You have installed your Basin Saver kit!
PLEASE NOTE:
Basin Saver products are designed to be installed from above the basin (drive surface around rim and grate). Recommended maximum depth is approx 4 feet below drive surface. However, if the basin repair depth is deeper than 4 feet from surface, given tight quarters, use the Basin Saver X-tra Strength product and install following these additional instructions:
1) Install NO MORE than two (2) adjacent walls at a time giving them at least 24 – 48 hours to dry before installing the remaining walls. Installer, keep your back to non-treated walls at all times on first day of installation. Before installing other walls on the following day, make sure epoxy has cured and dried on previously installed wall(s) before proceeding.
*Installing more than 2 adjacent walls at a time may possibly get the worker stuck to a basin wall via the epoxy drying during installation on another wall. If this should happen (even though we just told you NOT to do it), be prepared to immediately cut the shirt or pants with a knife or scissors to escape from the basin shaft. If the epoxy has dried to the skin, be prepared to lose some skin to save yourself from the basin shaft. Basin Saver is not responsible for scarring or other injuries caused due to lack of awareness or not adhering to this warning.
2) Allow for proper ventilation via fan or other forced air or make-up air systems. Wearing a ventilation mask rated for concrete dust and epoxy is recommended.
3) Make certain ingress and egress from basin shaft is established and easily navigable in case of need of emergency exit from basin shaft.
4) ALWAYS install with a partner that remains on the drive surface above the basin in case of emergency.
BASIN SAVER IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY INJURIES, DAMAGES OR DEATHS THAT MAY OCCUR DURING THE INSTALLATION OF ANY OF OUR PRODUCTS.
If installing Basin Saver onto recently poured concrete walls, allow at least 28 days for the concrete to cure (allowing all the moisture in the concrete to escape). *Use moisture detector before installing Basin-Saver.

- If multiple products were installed at the same address where the failure occurred, please provide the original site map from the project that shows each numbered basin where Basin Saver product was installed and note each location where failure occurred.
Above-Ground Installation Exceptions
There are times when an installation may call for the CFRP to be installed on the rim seat and/or then extending onto the catch basin skirt. If this should be done, the warranty does NOT apply to any of the material(s) installed above the basin walls. Explicitly: the rim seat and/or the catch basin skirt.
*PLEASE NOTE: Any CFRP installed on the catch basin skirt will be subject to wear and tear by pedestrian and automotive traffic. This will cause the water-proofing membrane to wear over time. Basin Saver STRONGLY recommends that if installation is done in this manner that the waterproofing membrane be reapplied at least once every 12 – 18 months in order to protect the CFRP from UVA/UVB rays and water exposure.
